Blue Water Sailing School

All over Youtube there are tons of channels taking travel to a new level, by giving up their homes to move onto the water. For a lot of people, travelling around the world is a dream that seems a bit challenging to attain. But some, have gone a different route and tapped into days of lorn by purchasing a sail boat and living the life of modern day water vagabonds. A decent sail boat can be purchased for under $250,000 and many have found boats for less than $10,000 of course needing a bit of TLC. These individuals and couples take on these work in progresses and fix them up to feel confident in setting sail. Some just to the Caribbean and some for longer travels across the Atlantic or Pacific to far flung locales that most people only read about.

My wife and I had organized, on more than one occasion, an around the world trip to check the costs and timeline for making such an adventure happen. The costs were around $50,000 per person with a large portion of that being for airfare. With a family of four this seemed a bit out of reach for our finances and put a big hold on this dream.

When I was a kid, my family had an RV or as we called it a motorhome. We used to go everywhere in that thing, and over time I began to dislike the trapped feeling you get in a large vehicle. It’s hard to get around in a city and requires a vehicle or moped to explore after finding a place to park. Now that I’m older, I still don’t like the RV Parks and the difficulty in getting around, but my sights have been set on a more global type of moving home a sailboat.

Now I was raised on the water, waterskiing, fishing, jet skis, etc., but my family never were the sailing types. In fact the closest I ever came to a sail was at summer camp and I did have fun, but just never considered it an option for getting around the world.

That is until last year, I stepped out of my bubble and decided to learn to sail a catamaran so that maybe someday I can take my family around the world at our own pace. I found Blue Water Sailing School in Ft. Lauderdale and made the leap into the big blue. Join me on my journey learning to sail and follow along on all of our future adventures.
